FOLLOWING THE TRAINING SESSION ATTENDEES WILL BE ABLE TO:

HYDRATION

  • Have an awareness of the implications/adverse effects of dehydration
  • Recognise the risk factors of developing dehydration and explore the use of screening tools to identify risk
  • Have an awareness of the health and Quality of Life benefits of promoting and ensuring adequate hydration in the older person
  • Understand different approaches and activities that can be implemented to improve hydration amongst residents in Care Homes

URINE PRODUCTION / URINALYSIS / UTI’S

  • Have a basic understanding of the Urinary System
  • Have an understanding of how bladder dysfunction can negatively impact continence and the management options
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms and risk factors of developing Urinary tract infections
  • Undertake Urinalysis and interpret the results

CONSTIPATION AND BOWEL MANAGEMENT

  • Have a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the Digestive system
  • Promote a healthy bowel habit
  • Recognise bowel changes using the Bristol Stool Chart
  • Recognise the signs, symptoms and risk factors of developing constipation
  • Have an understanding of Laxatives and when and how to treat an episode of constipation
  • Recognise the possible causes of Faecal incontinence and the management options

DAY TO DAY CATHETER MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION OF CAUTI’S

  • Have an awareness of best practice concerning catheter care
  • Have a working knowledge of undertaking catheter care and how to utilise catheter-related equipment.
  • Have a basic understanding of Infection Control interventions needed to minimise the risk of developing a Catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI)
  • Have a basic urinary catheter problem-solving skill base
