Catheterisation Study Day
- The study day is NOT a certification of competence. Competence in catheterisation can only be gained under the supervision of your Clinical Lead/Supervisor who should confirm and document that you have been observed competently undertaking the procedure on at least 3 occasions (Minimum- 3x male; 3x female).
- The purpose of this training is to provide the theoretical knowledge needed to inform how to safely undertake the procedure and promote competency in obtaining this skill. The information provided during this study day is not to replace any existing organisational policies/protocols or guidelines currently adhered to by staff.
Comprehensive Knowledge
Understanding the Legal & Professional Framework
Learn about Consent, Mental Capacity Act (2005), and your responsibilities under the RCN Catheter Care Guidelines (2021).
Understand when catheterisation is clinically justified and when alternatives should be considered.
Anatomy & Physiology Refresher
Review urinary system anatomy, male and female differences, and common complications such as urethral strictures, prostate issues, and pelvic organ prolapses.
Indications & Alternatives
Explore clinical indications for catheterisation (acute and chronic urinary retention, pressure injury management, end-of-life care) and when alternative options should be prioritised.
Infection Prevention & Risk Management
Learn how to minimise the risk of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTIs) by:
- Following strict Standard Infection Control Principles.
- Correctly managing drainage systems to maintain a sterile closed system.
- Identifying causative organisms and early warning signs of infection.
CAUTI Statistics & Contributory Factors – Gain insight into evidence-based strategies to reduce catheter-related infections.
Product Knowledge & Catheter Selection
- Understand different types of catheters (silicone, hydrogel-coated latex, silver-alloy coated, etc.) and their advantages, disadvantages, and indications.
- Learn to select the right size, length, and material for each patient, ensuring optimal comfort and clinical outcomes.
Practical Skills Development
Hands-On Demonstrations & Practice
Gain confidence with aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT) during catheter insertion and care.
Practise lubrication techniques and understand their function, risks, and suitable products.
Learn how to manage common complications such as autonomic dysreflexia, constipation (linked to catheter use), and catheter blockages.

Enhanced Professional Confidence
By the end of the study day, you will be able to:
Safely insert, manage, and remove urethral catheters.
Reduce infection risks and improve patient outcomes.
Make evidence-based decisions on when and how catheterisation should be used.
Provide compassionate, patient-focused care aligned with professional standards.
