CATHETER PROBLEM-SOLVING TRAINING PROGRAMME

FOLLOWING THE TRAINING SESSION ATTENDEES WILL BE ABLE TO:

TROUBLE-SHOOTING DIFFICULT RECATHETERISATION

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of product awareness and appropriate selection of catheter-related equipment
  • Recognise the risk factors that can contribute to catheterisation not being straightforward.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT) and Urinary Catheterisation procedures
  • Address and manage possible complications for Urethral and Suprapubic catheterisation
  • Understand the importance of recognising the signs and symptoms of Autonomic Dysreflexia and be aware of how to manage an episode.

CATHETER BYPASSING

  • Recognise the possible causes of a bypassing urinary catheter
  • Understand what key factors should be included in a symptom profile assessment to identify specific cause(s) of a bypassing urinary catheter
  • Analyse the results of a symptom profile assessment in respect of a bypassing urinary catheter
  • Develop and implement a plan to manage, monitor and evaluate interventions to help prevent/reduce further episodes of a bypassing urinary catheter

CATHETER BLOCKAGES/ENCRUSTATION

  • Recognise the possible causes of a urinary catheter that fails to drain urine
  • Recognise the risk factors of developing a urinary catheter that regularly blocks
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the nature and causes of developing urinary catheter encrustation
  • Develop and implement a plan to manage, monitor and evaluate interventions to help prevent/reduce further episodes of urinary catheter blockages

HAEMATURIA

  • Recognise the risk factors of developing haematuria with a urinary catheter-in-situ.
  • Use a rational system of assessment to manage an episode of haematuria
  • Recognise the circumstances when additional help should be sought
  • Develop and implement a plan to manage, monitor and evaluate interventions to help prevent/reduce further episodes of haematuria.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of how to manage a traumatic self-TWOC episode (traumatic removal of urinary catheter by resident)

CAUTI’S

  • Have an awareness of the incidence and healthcare implications of Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) within the community
  • Recognise contributory factors and how to minimise the risks of developing a CAUTI
  • Basic understanding of Gram Negative Bloodstream Infections (BSIs) and their treatment
  • Accurately undertake a catheter sample of urine (CSU)
  • Understand the rationale/guidelines regarding the need to change the urinary catheter following clinical confirmation of a CAUTI
  • Develop and implement a plan to manage, monitor and evaluate interventions to help prevent/reduce further episodes of CAUTI’s.
